The International Liquid Terminals Association (ILTA) is set to host its 2022 International Operating Conference & Trade Show next week in Houston.
ILTA president Kathryn Clay said she’s expecting about 500 paid attendees at this year’s largest gathering of liquid terminal industry professionals June 13-15 at the George R. Brown Convention Center and Marriott Marquis Houston. Pre-pandemic, the conferences typically attracted close to 600 registrants each year, Clay said.
Exhibitor-wise, the trade show had 270 booths filled at last count.
“(With) trade shows and conferences across industries, attendance and revenue are off about 34% on average, so people are getting two-thirds of their normal revenue, two-thirds of their exhibitors, and two-thirds of their conferences attendees, and we’re closer to 95%,” Clay said. “The conference registration isn’t quite back to 600, but the revenues are there, the exhibitors are there—and who knows, maybe we’ll hit the 600 mark.”
This year’s conference features expert-driven educational sessions, networking opportunities, and the industry’s largest trade show, which is designed to equip terminal operators with the tools they’ll need to succeed in challenging times. “Participants gain a greater awareness of issues impacting terminal facilities, discover new approaches to improve operations, and build relationships with colleagues and suppliers from around the world,” the association said.
Highlights include the annual Safety Awards Breakfast, which starts at 8 a.m. CST Tuesday; sessions on cybersecurity, OSHA regulations, storage tank cleaning and inspections; and a special keynote by retired U.S. Marine Gen. James Mattis.
“There’s a lot of excitement about Mattis,” Klay said.
Mattis, a four-star general who served as the 26th Secretary of Defense, will deliver the closing address at 12:15 p.m. CST Tuesday. His keynote, “Lessons in Servant Leadership and Leading by Example,” will lean into life lessons on leadership grounded in strong moral principles picked up during his tenure in the military.
“When leading large organizations, use touchstones,” Mattis said. “Put a human face on the mission, convey your intent, and reach your subordinates’ hearts and minds.”
Mattis says leadership isn’t about what you say, but rather what you do every day in support of your people. “Leaders serve and work for the people on their team,” he said. “I have been accused of making my subordinates my equals, and I happily stand guilty.” Known for his “intellect, candor and humility,” he will teach conference attendees how role models shape behavior by providing their people with examples of excellence.
The other keynote speakers are Peter Zeihan, author of “The Accidental Super Power,” “The Absent Superpower,” and “Dismantled Nations;” and U.S. Coast Guard Capt. Andy Meyers, who is the chief of the Office of Port and Facility Compliance. Zeihan will speak on “Living Through the End of the World,” and Meyers will address “U.S. Coast Guard Priorities and Perspectives.” Zeihan and Meyers both are scheduled to appear Monday.
Saudi Aramco and LBC Tank Terminals secured the top safety honors last year during the 15th Annual Safety Excellence Awards.
Competing in the large-company division, which includes companies with 200 or more full-time employees, Saudi Aramco’s Eastern Region Distribution Department accepted its first Platinum Safety Award remotely due to pandemic-related travel restrictions.
LBC sent terminal managers T.J. Buffaloe and Jody Kelley to accept its Platinum Safety Award in the small-company division in-person.
“It’s an honor to receive this award, and we’re excited that our employees’ efforts are being recognized by their peers in the industry,” Kelley said. “LBC strives to create a safety culture that provides a safe, environmentally sound work environment for all our employees, our contractors, and our community; and we value our partnership with ILTA and its members—and look for forward to continued success in the future.”
