A recent Fleet Lead roundtable brought together EndeavorB2B commercial vehicle editors from FleetOwner and Bulk Transporter to preview 2027 equipment changes. With new models hitting the market and incoming regulations nearing their deadline, the panel examines Volvo’s rugged new vocational truck reveal, the latest heavy-duty engine NOx rules, and new PC-12 engine oil formulations.

Key insights from Bulk Transporter Editor Jason McDaniel:

  • Volvo VNX appeal for bulk carriers: The new VNX is an extreme-duty vocational tractor offering rugged durability and safety features that liquid bulk fleets prioritize, such as standard driver-side curtain airbags and a tough shield windshield. The cab features 30% more ultra-high-strength steel while keeping weight limits comparable to previous models, which is a major advantage for bulk haulers who run maxed out on loads.
  • Powertrains for specialized fleets: The VNX's updated DD13 engine pushes 540 horsepower and 1,900 lb-ft of torque, offering excellent power for applications like oilfield hauling and rural dairy collection. The truck also features an upgraded engine brake utilizing a new turbine that delivers up to 630 braking horsepower, providing crucial control over liquid surges during steep descents.
  • Emissions regulations and the market: While OEMs are committed to rolling out EPA 2027 compliant engines, some fleets may choose to delay equipment purchases to avoid being on the bleeding edge of new technology. However, recent improvements in freight rates may give fleets more capital to invest in these new engines, oils, and technologies.
  • The PC-12 engine oil transition: Following a recent Shell Rotella event in Houston, fleet managers should know there is no need to panic or stockpile older oil. The incoming CL-4 oils are fully backward compatible and require no special flushing or altered drain intervals. Additionally, these cleaner, more efficient oils are designed to produce less soot, which can help alleviate common issues with DEF sensors and after-treatment systems.
