Randall J. “Randy” Clifford is National Tank Truck Carriers’ 75th chairman of the board.

The chairman and CEO of Long Beach, Calif.-based Ventura Transfer Company was elected to succeed Rob Sandlin, president and CEO of Florida Rock & Tank Lines, during NTTC’s 2022 Annual Conference & Exhibits in San Diego, Calif.

“I’m extremely honored to have the faith and trust of my peers to have been elected by the leaders of our industry as the next chairman of the board,” Clifford said.

Clifford shared some of his 153-year-old company’s history with conference attendees, and compared it to the NTTC. “Ventura Transfer had to continuously change and evolve to match the markets, economic conditions, services, technologies, and demographics of the time in order to remain relevant,” he said. “NTTC, in its 78 years, has had to do the same, and I look forward to building on that legacy and contributing to its future.”

Clifford began his career at Ventura directly out of college in 1980, graduating Summa Cum Laude with double majors and two valedictory nominations from Brigham Young University (BYU). Prior to his time at BYU he spent two years in Japan as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. At Ventura he learned the various aspects of the family business, where he worked alongside his father, mother and three brothers, and in 1987 succeeded his father as president.

Industry involvement is a company priority. Shortly after assuming the leadership of Ventura, he was elected to the board of directors of the California Trucking Association, rising through its ranks to become president in 2002. Since becoming a board member of the American Trucking Associations, Clifford has served on numerous committees and chaired the association’s Safety Policy Committee from 2011-13.

At the same time, he has served on the boards of the Agricultural & Food Carrier Conference and the Intermodal Motor Carrier Conference (IMCC), serving as IMCC’s chairman from 2017-19. Clifford has been an NTTC board member since 2013 and vice chairman since 2019.

“The National Tank Truck Carriers and our membership are extremely fortunate to have Randy Clifford named NTTC chairman,” said Ryan Streblow, President and CEO of NTTC. “Randy brings tremendous industry experience, transportation association knowledge, and an impeccable attention to detail. He’s been heavily involved with NTTC over the years and will do an amazing job to help guide the strategic priorities and growth of our organization.

“Randy has already embraced his role and is helping steer critical industry issues for the organization.”

Outside the business, Clifford is the father of six adult children and six grandchildren. He is a 42-year resident of Huntington Beach, has served on the budget committee of the local school district, as the founding chairman of its education foundation, and as a board member of the Greater Huntington Beach Interfaith Council.

“I have served the trucking industry my whole adult life, and have diesel running through my veins,” Clifford said. “I have learned so much from the industry leaders I have served with over the years, and owe a debt of gratitude to them and the associations they also served for making me a better leader and Ventura Transfer Company a safer, better company.

“I hope that in the coming year I can repay some of that debt to the NTTC and the industry that I love, and make it a more effective association for all tank truck carriers.”
