The Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA) is supporting federal legislation that would prohibit states and localities from imposing what is said are new discriminatory motor vehicle rental taxes, according to TRALA information.

The bill, HR 2453, was introduced in the House of Representatives on May 23 as part of a bi-partisan delegation led by Rep Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Rep Chris Cannon (R-UT).

TRALA said that a recent study has shown that consumers have paid about $6 billion in state and local motor vehicle rental taxes since 1990. Unlike most motor vehicle taxes and fees, the majority of these funds have not been used to fund transportation infrastructure. Instead, these tax revenues are often used to fund the construction of stadiums, convention centers and other local projects.

TRALA said it is joined by a coalition of business travel groups, consumer organizations, tax reform groups, and car and truck rental companies in supporting the bill.
