CB&I garners Steel Tank accolades

June 2, 2022
STI/SPFA honors McDermott’s storage business with three safety awards, two Field-Erected Tank of the Year honors during annual meeting

CB&I, the storage tank and terminal business of McDermott, recently garnered multiple accolades from the Steel Tank Institute/Steel Plate Fabricators Association (STI/SPFA) during the organization’s annual meeting in New Orleans, La.

The company’s haul included safety awards in three categories, and two Field-Erected Tank of the Year honors.

The safety awards presented by STI/SPFA each year acknowledge the highest achievements of member companies engaged in shop fabrication, inspection, maintenance and field construction.

CB&I’s operating groups in North America earned these distinctions for 2021 performance:

  • Safety Diamond Club Award: Fabricators or affiliate members who complete at least 1 million work hours without a recordable incident
  • Safety Award of Excellence: Member companies whose employees achieved an OSHA Total Recordable Incident Rate (TRIR) of zero
  • Safety Award of Achievement: Member companies that accomplished a minimum 10% reduction in their TRIR, with no fatalities, as compared with the average TRIR for the three previous years

“Many of our employees routinely work at heights, bending, fitting, welding, and testing thick plates of steel while working on tanks and high-pressure spheres that store liquids and gases at extreme temperatures,” said Cesar Canals, senior vice president of CB&I. “Performing this work, under these conditions, without a recordable incident is a testament to the unwavering commitment of our team to put safety first in everything we do.”

The Tank of the Year awards were in the API 620 Low Pressure Liquid Storage Tank and ASME Pressure Vessel Storage categories. The Pressure Vessel award was for the replacement of a hot lime softener vessel with a net capacity of 183,700 gallons and design temperature of 300 degrees F at a refinery in Linden, N.J.

“Since 2012, CB&I has received a total of 28 awards in the field-erected tanks category with projects in six of the seven classifications,” Canals said. “This not only demonstrates the breadth of solutions we provide our customers—with winning projects spanning API 620/650 tanks, ASME spheres, specialty storage, and water storage—but is also a testament to the quality and performance you can expect from facilities designed and built by CB&I.”
