KP Logistik orders 100 LNG-fueled trucks from Scania

SCANIA says it will deliver 100 liquified gas trucks to German transportation logistics company KP Logistik in its “largest single order to date.”

The Scania R 410 tractor units will be split between KP’s centers in Stavenhagen and Wustermark, near Berlin, and used for deliveries of dry, refrigerated and frozen foods, primarily to Netto’s and Norma’s retail stores in eastern Germany.

“With this strategic order for gas vehicles, we want to pioneer more sustainable transport and set a good example for the transport industry,” said David Brokholm, managing director for KP Logistik GmbH. “Carbon emissions from natural gas trucks are lower than from diesel and are further reduced by up to 90% if we use biogas.”

In addition to environmental aspects, KP Logistik is expected to benefit from the road toll exemption and subsidies on gas-powered vehicles in force in Germany since the beginning of the year, helping offset the higher cost for gas vehicles.

“That made it much easier for us to opt for gas technology,” Brokholm said.

The new Scania trucks will be operated in the fleet for four to five years, during which time each truck is expected to accumulate up to 800,000 kilometers (497,097 miles). They feature a large cab with two beds, premium infotainment system and extensive safety package.

With two 340- and 400-liter capacity tanks (89.8 to 106 gallons), the trucks will have a range of up to 1,100 kilometers (684 miles). Fuel provider Liquind 24/7 is expected to have permanent liquified gas filling stations in place by this summer at Wustermark and Stavenhagen, which also will be open to all customers. The liquified vehicle gas infrastructure in Germany is now gradually being expanded and will increase to approximately 20 filling stations by the end of 2019.

KP Logistik, a Danish third-generation family business, has a staff of 400 and a fleet of 150 Scania trucks.

The company’s new Scanias will be delivered with a full-service maintenance contract, Scania said. The dealer, LKW-Center-Petersen in Stavenhagen, has prepared its workshop and trained its service technicians in the safe handling of liquefied gas.

“We are seeing an ever-increasing interest in our gas vehicles, and the order from KP Logistik is the largest so far,” said Christian Hottgenroth, Scania’s truck sales director for Germany and Austria.
