Enhancing AI security: NMFTA releases new governance resource
The National Motor Freight Traffic Association recently released a new resource designed to help trucking and logistics organizations deploy artificial intelligence “securely, responsibly, and with confidence.”
From maintenance planning and route optimization to cybersecurity monitoring and back-office operations, AI tools are rapidly entering transportation environments. While these technologies offer significant opportunities to improve efficiency and decision-making, they also introduce new considerations related to data protection, oversight, accountability, and operational risk.
NMFTA’s Cybersecurity AI Governance Framework is a free resource that provides 50 actionable controls across five governance domains, helping fleets and logistics providers establish policies, evaluate risks, and implement safeguards before AI systems become deeply embedded in critical business processes, the association reported.
“Many organizations are already using AI in some capacity, whether through dedicated tools or capabilities embedded within existing software platforms,” Ben Wilkens, NMFTA director of cybersecurity, said in a news release. “The challenge isn’t whether AI will be part of operations—it’s ensuring organizations have the visibility, governance, and controls necessary to use it responsibly.”
Developed specifically with transportation operations in mind, the framework helps organizations evaluate AI use cases, define accountability, assess vendor offerings, protect sensitive data, and manage cybersecurity risks associated with AI-enabled technologies.
