BeyondTrucks recently introduced its new Compatibility Engine, a dispatching tool designed to automatically verify driver, tractor, and trailer assignments against a fleet’s specific rules before a load is dispatched.
The module is built for complex and specialized operations where a single dispatch error could result in a rejected load, a compliance violation, or a safety incident, BeyondTrucks CEO Hans Galland explained during American Trucking Associations’ Management Conference & Exhibition. According to BeyondTrucks, dispatchers often evaluate 50-plus factors for each load assignment. The new engine streamlines the job by acting as an automatic guardrail for both manual dispatcher assignments and AI-recommended route plans, allowing fleets to set customized requirements at the stop, commodity, customer, or equipment level.
Rather than relying on manual checks, the system digitizes fleet rules.
“In most fleets today, compatibility rules live in the heads of experienced dispatchers,” Galland said in a press release. “The BeyondTrucks Compatibility Engine lets fleets turn tribal knowledge into institutional knowledge.” Speaking to media on the MCE exhibit floor, Galland further noted that dispatch decisions are frequently managed on “a cheat sheet,” a “Post-it note,” and “in the head of the dispatcher who’s been with the company for decades.”
The Compatibility Engine is highly configurable to handle specialized operations. According to FleetOwner, Galland explained that some chemical fleets manage as many as 400 different types of driver qualifications, tracking unique variables such as facial hair policies or specific facility access requirements. When a dispatch decision conflicts with a fleet’s established rules—such as an hours-of-service limitation, an expired medical card, or an incompatible trailer—the platform automatically flags the issue and ranks the most suitable alternatives.
Key capabilities of the engine include:
- Flexible rule definition: Requirements are matched against the qualifications and status of any driver, tractor, or trailer.
- Explainability and audit trails: Dispatchers can see exactly which rule applied when an assignment is flagged, and overrides are logged with details on who made them and why for safety and compliance records.
- Live compliance data: Driver and equipment compliance statuses feed directly into compatibility checks.
By feeding these customized constraints directly into its AI-native optimization solver, BeyondTrucks ensures every route planned by AI is practically executable, helping fleets mitigate the severe financial and legal risks associated with manual dispatch errors. “A dispatch mistake may mean a highway pileup,” Galland said at MCE. “If a license is expired, it means potentially a nuclear verdict.
“[The Compatibility Engine] bridges the gap between knowing about something and doing something ... it helps improve decision-making, and that can save the existence of a business.”
