NTTC welcomes latest FMCSA effort to revise HOS requirements

Dan Furth, National Tank Truck Carriers president, welcomed the announcement that the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is studying hours-of-service rule changes related to problems created by the electronic logging device (ELD) mandate.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) released an Advanced Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for the hours of service (HOS) regulations for interstate truck drivers to address the ELD issues.

“ELDs are an essential safety requirement for our industry, Furth said. “However, the tight technical settings of these devices mean that many groups are having trouble adhering to the current HOS regulations. This new round of rulemaking is an opportunity to keep the safety benefits of ELDs while providing relief for those struggling to comply.

“NTTC welcomes proposals to modify the hours rules. The regulatory process means that we can ensure that any changes keep highway safety as our industry’s number one priority.”

NTTC is reviewing the proposal and looks forward to working with FMCSA to craft HOS rules that provide needed regulatory flexibility while advancing the core safety missions of both NTTC and FMCSA, according to Furth.
