TWO diversified liquid and dry bulk haulers were recognized by National Tank Truck Carriers as its latest North American Safety Champions: Groendyke Transport Inc, Enid, Oklahoma, and Tandet Logistics Inc, Oakville, Ontario, Canada.

The prestigious Heil safety trophies were presented to the carriers during the NTTC’s Annual Conference at the Wynn Las Vegas in Las Vegas, Nevada. Heil Trailer proudly sponsors the North American Safety Awards, which recognize the best tank truck industry safety programs in two different mileage divisions.

“Congratulations to both Groendyke and Tandet,” said NTTC Chairman John Whittington of Grammer Industries. “This year’s contest was particularly competitive across all mileage classes, so both carriers should be extremely proud of their companywide safety performance. With Heil’s continued support, we’re pleased to recognize these two carriers as best in class, which underscores the NTTC’s safety-based mission.”

Groendyke Transport won in the Harvison Division (more than 15 million miles) and Tandet Logistics won in the Sutherland Division (fewer than 15 million miles).

Groendyke Transport has now earned NTTC’s North American Safety Champion Award a record eight times. Groendyke Transport has now won Heil Trophies for its safety efforts in 1973, 1975, 1990, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2016 and 2018.

“It is a humbling and deeply gratifying experience to win our eighth Heil Trophy,” said Groendyke President Greg Hodgen. “This is the Super Bowl of the tank truck industry. It validates the hard work of our more than 1,500 employees to ensure the safety of our drivers, customers and the motoring public each and every day.”

Groendyke Transport is a privately held, family-owned company that services 49 states, Canada, and Mexico from its 42 terminals in 15 states.

Tandet Logistics is a division of the Tandet Group, a family owned and managed company that provides services in the transport, leasing, brokerage and power generation markets. Tandet operates within Canada and across the border delivering to and from all provinces and states in continental North America. Tandet has been recognized by NTTC as a Safety Contest Grand Award recipient in its mileage class six times since 2005.

“Winning this trophy was a humbling experience,” said Scott Tilley, Tandet Logistics president. “It left me just about speechless, but it was great to share the stage with a company like Groendyke. Safety has been a part of Tandet’s DNA from the very start, and this award shows we are on the right track.

Groendyke Transport led the 40 to 90 million mileage category within the Harvison Division with an accident frequency of 0.462 accidents per million miles. In the Sutherland Division, Tandet Logistics was the champion in the 5 to 7 million miles class. Tandet’s accident frequency of .150 accidents per million miles was the winning mark in that category. By winning their respective mileage classes, both motor carriers qualified as finalists.

Groendyke Transport’s Mike Elmenhorst and Dave Herdman of Tandet Logistics were recognized as NTTC’s Safety Professionals of the Year at the Safety Awards banquet during the Annual meeting of NTTC’s Tank Truck Safety & Security Council on June 20 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
