MAC Trailer expands into liquid bulk trailer market

THREE YEARS after entering the tank trailer market with a dry bulker, MAC Trailer of Alliance, Ohio, has added its first liquid tanker, a 6,300-gallon non-code vacuum trailer. Named MAC-VAC, the aluminum trailer debuted at the 2011 Mid-America Trucking Show (MATS) March 31 to April 2 in Louisville, Kentucky.

The vacuum trailer was designed to haul water to drilling sites for fracturing oil and gas formations. Company officials said the trailer is getting a good reception from the production companies that are operating in the Marcellus gas shale formation that runs from New York, through Pennsylvania, and into West Virginia.

Recent reports suggest that the Marcellus formation may contain upwards of 1,300 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. New extraction techniques in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing have given a massive boost to the gas wells in the Marcellus formation, and production companies are swarming to the region.

MAC Trailer has targeted that market with a vacuum trailer constructed of quarter-inch 5454 H-34 aluminum plate for the shell and reinforced with formed channel external rings and three internal baffles. Design pressure is 14.7 psi and 13 inches HG vacuum.

Loading lines at the rear are four inches and six inches. Also standard are a rear sight tube, National Vacuum Equipment manways, and hose troughs on both sides. The unit displayed at MATS had an on-board digital scale from Right Weigh.

A full-length walkway and easy access ladder with double handrails add to driver safety. The fixed safety rail on the show model will be replaced with a folding safety rail on full production units, according to Jim Maiorana, MAC Trailer vice-president.  ♦
