Western Star Truck Sales Inc added a new 4700 tractor to its product lineup, and this one is focused on tank truck fleets. The wraps came off the new tractor during a special event on May 8 in Las Vegas NV. The 4700 tractor and additional product updates are now available to order.

Since successfully launching the 4700 truck in March 2011 to six targeted vocational segments, Western Star customers immediately recognized the potential of this truck as a tractor configuration. The 4700 tractor provides the ideal solution for bulk haul, local delivery, and construction applications, according to Western Star officials.

“The response from our vocational customers has been overwhelmingly positive, and we're excited to expand our offering to new markets and customers that have been eager to experience the quality and customization of a Western Star,” said Guy Lemieux, marketing segment manager, Western Star.

Available in a set-forward and set-back day cab configuration, the 4700 tractor incorporates a high visibility hood, and a wide variety of fifth wheel and wheelbase selections. The 4700 tractor also features one of the broadest power range offerings in a single truck model. From the lightweight and economical Cummins ISC and ISL engines, to the powerful and efficient Detroit DD13, the 4700 features power ratings from 260 to 470 horsepower. Combined with several transmission offerings including the Allison automatic, Eaton manual, and Eaton UltraShift PLUS, the 4700 tractor can be spec'd perfectly for many regional and bulk haul applications.

New options

In addition to the new tractor, the company also announced several new options for the 4700 product line. These include:

Hendrickson and Watson Chalin lift axles: Several new lift axle solutions from Hendrickson and Watson Chalin increase the customization options for vocational applications. The benefits include varying weight savings, SPIF compliance, optimized packaging and added durability, to name a few.

New roof fairings and side extenders: The addition of roof fairing and side extenders help to improve aerodynamic performance and maximize fuel efficiency.

Chalmers Suspension: The durability of the Chalmers rubber spring suspension offers increased stability and traction for off-road applications, and lower maintenance costs on suspensions and other components such as tires.

Western Star also announced new powertrain options for its 6900 truck model. Now available for all 6900 truck configurations, the Detroit DD16 engine increases fuel economy and productivity. The powerful 15.6 liter DD16 features up to 600 hp and 2,050 lb-ft of torque, and provides superior torque curve for the heaviest loads in extreme vocational applications such as logging, mining, oil field, and heavy haul.

In addition the Detroit Series 60 Tier 3 engine is now available for the Western Star 6900 Twin Steer (TS) truck model. Ideal for the most rugged off-highway vocational applications, the Series 60 Tier 3 features a single stage turbo and no EGR. This not only increases fuel efficiency, but minimizes maintenance and operational costs. The engine's design also eliminates the need for any kind of regeneration, further enhancing its efficiencies.

The Allison RDS 4500 and 4700 automatic transmissions are now available for the 6900TS. Ideal for oil pumping applications, the transmissions' vehicle propulsion mode puts power to the wheels in rugged or remote locations, while stationary mode provides power the pumps, winches and augers in the field. This smoother shifting improves performance, durability and fuel efficiency.
