Groendyke names memorial scholarship winner

June 30, 2025
Kaitlyn Heinz, daughter of operations manager Chris Heinz, is this year’s recipient of an award named after Jonathon Luevano, a young driver who was shot and killed in 2015.

Groendyke Transport recently award Kaitlyn Heinz this year’s Jonathan Luevano Memorial Scholarship.

Heinz receives $1,500 toward her fall tuition as a freshman at The College of New Jersey, where she plans to major in elementary education and psychology, the company reported. She rose to the top of scholarship applicants with a 4.3 weighted GPA, the quality of her essay, and a long list of extracurricular activities, such as yearbook, SADD, women of the world, and hero clubs.

Heinz is the daughter of Chris Heinz, Groendyke operations manager.

“It has been a great honor to award this scholarship in Jonathan’s memory, and it’s hard to believe this is its 10th anniversary,” Groendyke CEO Greg Hodgen said in a news release. “Kaitlyn’s scholarship is well-deserved, and we are proud to help her achieve her academic goals.”

Applications for the scholarship are reviewed and chosen anonymously by the scholarship committee.

First awarded in 2016, the scholarship is given each year to a dependent or grandchild of a Groendyke employee to help pay for their education. It honors the memory of Jonathan Luevano, a young driver at Groendyke’s Fort Worth, Texas, terminal who was shot and killed on May 7, 2015, while delivering fuel to a local convenience store.
