Kustom Cooling Products LLC (KCP) has released a 100% aluminum radiator and air-conditioner condenser line for Freightliner trucks. By mid-2012, KCP will be adding the Volvo VN, International Pro-Star, and Mack Vision model trucks to its cooling products lineup. The firm offers aluminum aftermarket replacement radiators and A/C condensers specifically targeting 2007 and newer platform engines.
KCP radiators and A/C condensers were tested and have been successfully operating on select fleets in the southwest for the past three years. Prototyping of those applications has gone so well that the KCP products have more than 400,000 miles traveled in the field.
These products are 100% aluminum including the core, side supports, and tanks. The core uses a fully patented wavy-style fin built in a bar-and-plate configuration. The aluminum configuration has several advantages over plastic tank or copper brass replacement. Design flexibility from working with only one type of metal eliminates tube to header joint failures. Aluminum allows much higher operating temperatures, and since the tubes themselves are thicker than OE, it allows for better thermal stress, vibration, and shock absorption.
The wavy-style fin design the core utilizes is the same for both radiator and A/C condenser. This design has several advantages over both straight- and louvered-fin configurations. Surface area is increased for greater cooling capacity, and the smooth fins reduce clogging due to debris and simplify maintenance. With an increased contact area of fin to plate, overall strength of the core is increased and provides more uniform control of thermal expansion. Fins are much stronger and less susceptible to bending or laying over, and the wavy-fin design promotes slower airflow across the cooling core for better cooling efficiency.
