Oil and gas sector workers have a new resource to help them understand the serious dangers of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas, which can cause serious injury or even death. J J Keller developed its new H2S: Understand the Dangers handbook as a training aid.
“Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, flammable, toxic gas that can be rapidly absorbed by the lungs when released into the air, making it a health risk at low concentrations and immediately dangerous to life and health at high concentrations,” said Stefanie Williams, J J Keller associate editor. “Since the loss of smell can occur instantaneously or with continuous low-level exposure, it is important for employers to recognize the sources of H2S and how to protect against releases. Employees need to understand the risks, recognize exposure, and know the procedures to follow. Choosing to understand the risks and following safety procedures can prevent workers from becoming victims.”
The 28-page handbook can be used to supplement onsite H2S training and as a field reference, and covers:
*Properties of H2S
*What makes H2S dangerous
*Sources of H2S, protective measures and PPE
*Symptoms and health effects of exposure
*Medical and first aid treatments
*General evacuation and emergency response procedures, with space provided to add a company-specific emergency action plan.
