The Winther family, founders and owners of Elkton MD-based Delaware Express Co, is accomplishing what experts say fewer than 12% of all family-owned businesses do. The third generation is now taking up the management reins.
Bryan Winther recently joined Delaware Express as the third generation in the family business and is the technology and efficiencies analyst in the firm. After graduating from Cornell University, he spent three years teaching in underprivileged schools, including a complete term with Teach for America, followed by four years as the IT Director of the rapidly growing Success Academies where he opened 10 schools throughout NYC.
Bryan’s father, Robert is president of Delaware Express Co. He has supervised the evolution of the company from a local fertilizer carrier into a regional rail transfer dry bulk and liquid tank specialty firm. He envisions steady growth for Delaware Express and has optimistic plans in spite of an uncertain economy.
Robert acquired his fiscal management skills from his father, Walter, who studied accounting at Wharton and handled the company finances for decades. On December 22, 2011, Walter Winther drove from his home in Chadds Ford PA to join his son and grandson in celebrating his 85th birthday at Delaware Express.
