March 18, 2024
Updates include a new 589 sleeper configuration, and new PTO and transmission options for vocational applications

Peterbilt recently introduced three new offerings, including a new sleeper configuration for the Model 589, new PTO (power take-off) functionality, and a new transmission for vocational applications.

The expansion of Peterbilt’s “Legendary” 589 portfolio adds a 72-in. low roof sleeper that provides customers with “sleek, long, and lean” styling, along with new amenities designed to enhance comfort and efficiency, the manufacturer reported.

“The new Model 589 72-in. low roof sleeper is the perfect platform for customers that require a low roof configuration for their operations, as well as for drivers who appreciate a stylish truck they can customize with chrome and other accessories,” Jake Montero, Peterbilt assistant general manager for sales and marketing, said in a news release.

The 72-in. low roof sleeper features include:

  • Storage solutions:
    • Full-height wardrobe and passenger side microwave tray
    • Optional right-hand cubby
    • Driver side workstation and storage cabinet
    • Optional refrigerator and above the bunk shelf
  • Power provisions:
    • Four standard 12-volt outlets
    • Factory-installed inverters
    • Aftermarket inverter installation provisions
    • 22-in. flat-screen TV mounting and electrical provisions

New PTO functionality

Peterbilt’s new PTO option for the Paccar TX-8 automatic transmission in Models 548, 537, and 536 allows for PTO engagement beyond first gear, increasing vehicle capabilities for vocational applications, the OEM said.

“This additional PTO functionality provides the versatility to support Peterbilt customers with the right products and technologies for their unique business needs,” Montero said. “The PACCAR TX-8 is a great fit for utility service, tow trucks, and a wide range of other vocational applications.”

PACCAR’s 8-speed automatic transmission is designed to work seamlessly with PACCAR PX engines and enhances performance, increases fuel efficiency, and lowers cost of operation for Peterbilt’s medium-duty and vocational applications with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of up to 57,000 lbs.

New transmission availability

The all-new Paccar TX-12 Pro automated transmission now is available for the 567 and 579. Designed to be versatile and efficient, the TX-12 Pro brings TX-12 performance to vocational applications. It is engineered to operate with engines that have up to 1,700 lb.-ft. of torque and a maximum GCWR of 70,000 lbs.

TX-12 Pro features and benefits include:

  • Dual PTO functionality to power multiple hydraulic devices simultaneously
  • New Extreme Duty Clutch for improved low-speed maneuvering with higher loads
  • Rock Free Mode helps rock the truck free from mud, sand or snow
  • Off-Highway Calibration enables shift points that are tuned for changing off-highway conditions with a bias toward shifting less often
  • Secondary Configuration for a tailored driving experience that accounts for toggling between two calibrations for the load or terrain

“The addition of the Paccar TX-12 Pro automated transmission enhances Peterbilt’s ability to provide the best-performing trucks in the industry with improved efficiency, low speed maneuverability and improved reliability to our vocational customers,” Montero said.
