TSI rises after two declines

The Transportation Services Index (TSI) for freight rose 0.5 percent to 112.4 in August from the July level of 111.9, turning up after two consecutive monthly declines.

The August 2005 level of 112.4 is 2.0 percent higher than the August 2004 level of 110.2, according to Department of Transportation information.

TSI is a single seasonally adjusted index of the month-to-month changes in the output of services provided by the for-hire transportation industries, including for-hire trucking, railroad freight services, inland waterways transportation, pipeline transportation, and air freight.

It does not include private trucking, international or coastal waterborne movements, courier services, or the US Postal Service.
