Commercial Trucks to Participate in Michelin Challenge Bibendum

For the first time, commercial trucks will participate in the Michelin Challenge Bibendum October 26 in Los Angeles CA, October 27 in Fontana CA, and October 28-29 in Las Vegas NV. Freightliner and Volvo are among the truck manufacturers that will display the latest technologies and most forward-thinking options available for the commercial market, according to Michelin information.

Michelin Challenge Bibendum 2001 is an independent, real-world demonstration of the auto industry's commitment to, and progress in the development of, environmentally innovative vehicles.

"The driving distinctions between passenger cars and commercial trucks and buses are tremendous," said John Rice, chief operating officer for Michelin Americas Truck Tires, Greenville SC.

"The average passenger car travels less than 12,000 miles per year and consumes 606 gallons of fuel. Tractor-trailers average over 65,000 miles per year in the United States and consume almost 13,000 gallons of fuel per vehicle. It is vital that commercial trucking be integrally involved in addressing our environmental concerns. This is the main reason behind including commercial vehicles in the Michelin Challenge Bibendum this year."

"The environment is a priority for the industry," said Randy Clark, vice president of marketing for Michelin Americas Truck Tires. "Government and industry have been working together to improve fuel economy, lower diesel emissions and develop alternative energy sources. These investigations have led to some creative technologies which will benefit our environment as a whole. That's exactly what manufacturers will be showcasing at this event."
