Audit begun on FMCSA safety program

An audit of the motor carrier safety program in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has been initiated by the Department of Transportation's office of the inspector general (IG). The audit will address directions by Congress through the Motor Carriers Safety Improvement Act for FMCSA to reduce large truck crashes through increased reviews of motor carriers and stronger enforcement measures against violators of the motor carrier safety regulations. The 1999 act also requires FMCSA to initiate safety audits for new entrant motor carriers and to complete numerous rulemakings associated with the motor carrier industry and the commercial driver license program.
