Four truck drivers have been selected as finalists for the Goodyear North America Highway Hero Award, a program that honors truck drivers for heroic deeds while on duty. One driver will be named the 2003 Goodyear North America Highway Hero at the Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville KY in March 2004. The finalists are:
-
David Dunham of Fitchburg MA, who pulled a fellow truck driver out of a burning rig. He rescued the injured driver shortly before the entire vehicle became engulfed in flames.
-
Derrick Harris of Hopewell VA, who stopped to help a man who was on fire. He attended to the victim's immediate needs using a blanket and a cooler of water.
-
Joe Sines of Horse Shoe Run WV pulled two trapped girls, ages one and seven, from the backseat of a rolled-over van. Unfortunately, the mother was seriously injured and died shortly after.
-
Anne Spriggs of Willow Springs MO, who administered CPR to an unconscious girl after her mother waved Spriggs down at a truckstop. A former nurse, Sprigg's training and compassion saved the life of the girl.
