BULK Carrier Day, an annual one-day tank truck industry show, turned 35 this year. The event, which combined a tank truck beauty contest and an awards dinner, was held June 4.

Winning exhibitors this year included All Chem Transport, Bass Transportation, Dana Transport Inc, Eastern Bulk Transport, Enterprise Transportation Inc, Roy Hassel Transport, Krajack Tank Lines Inc, Langer Transport Corp, Linden Bulk Transportation Co, Schneider National Bulk Carriers, Superior Carriers Inc, and Venezia Hauling Inc.

Bulk Carrier Day has become a tradition for tank truck carriers on the East Coast. It is an outgrowth of Bulk Carrier Night, which was started by the New Jersey tank truck industry in 1968. In 1975, the program was expanded into Bulk Carrier Day with its equipment show and banquet. Since then, the industry event has had the same location — The Pines Manor. Bulk Carrier Day has raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity over the years.

Bulk Carrier Day is organized and sponsored by the Bulk Carrier Day Committee, which includes tank truck carriers and suppliers. Chairman of the 2002 Bulk Carrier Day Committee was Donald J Hannon, Bass Transportation. Co-chairmen were Andy Paul, Venezia Hauling Inc, and Terri Thurston, Dana Leasing Corp.

Judges for the 2002 Equipment Contest were Sgt Paul Kelly and Sgt Adam Subsda, New Jersey State Police, and Steven Dulney, Department of Transportation, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

Money raised from Bulk Carrier Day was donated to the St Barnabas Burn Foundation, Deborah Hospital Foundation, and Seaman's Church Institute.

The 2003 Bulk Carrier Day will be held Tuesday, June 3 at The Pines Manor in Edison.
