FMCSA schedules public sessions on carrier safety

Aug. 23, 2004
The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has scheduled a series of public listening sessions in September and October to gather information on ways to measure the safety of truck and bus operations.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has scheduled a series of public listening sessions in September and October to gather information on ways to measure the safety of truck and bus operations. The agency is soliciting information from carriers, insurance and safety advocacy groups, traffic enforcement professionals, and the public, and then plans to take effective action.

FMCSA wants to examine its safety program--how it is used, how it can be improved, and how improvements can be added to it. The agency currently inspects higher risk carriers through a series of on-site inspections and reviews. However, FMCSA is uncertain whether the process will remain effective in the face of expected increases in freight volume. Over the next 20 years, freight volume is expected to increase 50 percent from current levels.

Dates and locations for the public sessions are:
•September 21, Doubletree Hotel, Mission Valley, San Diego CA.
•September 28, Sheraton Atlanta Hotel, Atlanta GA.
•October 5, Hampton Inn & Suites, Mesquite (Dallas) TX.
•October 12, Wyndham Chicago Hotel, Chicago IL.
•October 19, Fairview Park Marriott, Falls Church, VA.
•October 26, Sheraton Springfield, Springfield, MA.
