Julie Anna Cirillo, Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) assistant administrator and chief safety officer, plans to retire at the end of 2002. She made the announcement August 13 in a meeting with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) headquarters staff and by e-mail to the agency's workforce.

Cirillo was the first head of the FMCSA, a modal agency within the United States Department of Transportation, formed by the Motor Carrier Safety Improvement Act of 1999 to boost truck and bus safety. Her last FMCSA workday is Jan 3, 2003.
