Truck Renting and Leasing Association (TRALA)-supported federal legislation that would prohibit states and localities from imposing new discriminatory motor vehicle rental taxes was introduced in the United States House of Representatives recently. The bill, HR 2453, was introduced by a bipartisan delegation of representatives led by Reps Rick Boucher (D-VA) and Chris Cannon (R-UT).

A recent study has shown that consumers have paid about $6 billion in state and local motor vehicle rental taxes since 1990. Unlike most motor vehicle taxes and fees, most of this money has not been used to fund transportation infrastructure.
