UAW, Volvo unable to reach accord

The International United Auto Workers (UAW) and its affiliated local No 2069 have engaged in a strike at the Volvo Trucks North America New River Valley VA plant after Volvo was unable to reach an agreement with the union on terms of a new contract, according to Volvo information.

The contract would cover approximately 2,600 UAW members at the truck assembly plant. Negotiations for the new contract began on January 8, 2008. By its terms, the existing contract expired at 11:59 pm January 31, 2008, Volvo said.

Volvo said it would continue to bargain in good faith until an agreement can be achieved. Volvo Trucks North America assembles its Volvo VT, VN, and VHD trucks at the plant in Dublin VA. Volvo engines for North America are assembled in Hagerstown MD.
