WITH more manufacturers now serving the market, cement haulers have plenty of choices when shopping for new dry bulk trailers. Many of the bulker manufacturers displayed their latest products during the 2002 Cargo Tank Maintenance Seminar and Exhibition November 4-6 in Chicago, Illinois.
The drive to achieve the lowest tare weight and maximum cargo capacity was evident in all of the cement trailers on display. Weight-saving features included integrated axle/air suspension systems, which now have weights equal to or lower than springs.
After building dry bulkers for other companies, Stephens Pneumatics Inc, Haslet TX, has begun to focus on products bearing its own name. The builder showed a 1,000-cu-ft aluminum cement trailer with a steel frame. Tank hardware included Knappco domelids and check valve, Sure Seal hopper tees and butterfly valves, and Allegheny pipe sections. Running gear included a Hendrickson Intraax air suspension, MeritorWABCO antilock braking, and steel disc wheels.
Fly ash used in cement production can be transported in this 1600-cu-ft bulker from Beall Corp, Portland OR. The rounded shape contributes to vessel strength and results in a more aerodynamic shape. Tank hardware includes Sure Seal tees and butterfly valves, Knappco check valves and domelids, Allegheny piping components, and a Bayco pressure-relief vent. For running gear, the trailer has Hendrickson's Intraax air suspension, Haldex antilock braking, and Alcoa aluminum disc wheels.

Preventing driver falls is one reason this 1,040-cu-ft Heil 1040LW Jet cement trailer was specified with Knappco's remote control, air operated manhole cover. The driver can remain on the ground when opening the manhole cover for product loading. The trailer, which was exhibited by Stuart Tank Sales Corp, Elkhorn WI, also had Sure Seal butterfly valves and aerators, Hendrickson Intraax air suspension, MeritorWABCO ABS, Goodyear 295/75R22.5 tires, and Alcoa aluminum disc wheels.
Built by Trail King Industries, Mitchell SD, this 1,000-cu-ft cement trailer is being marketed jointly by sister companies Trail King and Walker Stainless Equipment Co, New Lisbon WI. The 8,900-lb trailer comes with an array of standard lightweight components, including Hendrickson Intraax air suspension, aluminum hubs, Centrifuse brake drums, and Accuride aluminum disc wheels. Tank hardware includes Allegheny piping, Ultraflo tees and butterfly valves, and Knappco domelids and check valve.
Low tare weight was a key objective with this 1,000-cu-ft aluminum cement trailer from Tremcar Inc, Iberville PQ, Canada. The trailer weighed in at 8,500 pounds.
