Prime Inc recognized for driver fitness program

Jan. 14, 2014

Prime Inc, a transportation company with more than 6,000 tanker, refrigerated, and flatbed and operators, was just named Healthiest Company by Everyday Health, a digital health and wellness company. This was the inaugural presentation the Everyday Health Awards for Innovation.

Prime Inc received the honor for its driver health and fitness program, which was implemented in 2012 to address the issue of driver obesity and to combat metabolic syndrome, which is a cluster of conditions including increased blood pressure, high blood sugar, excess body fat around the waist, and abnormal cholesterol levels. Together, these conditions increase a person’s risk of heart disease, stroke and diabetes.

Nationwide, 86% of America’s truck drivers are overweight and 57% are clinically obese. The Prime Inc program, which is the first of its kind in the commercial carrier industry, uses digital health technology to address obesity and improve driver health.

“With more than 6,000 drivers, we knew that we had to find a technology solution to help monitor and track progress,” said Siphiwe Baleka, Prime Inc’s driver health and fitness coach. “Our drivers use the Body Media Link Armband and the Mio Motiva Drive+ Strapless Heart Rate Watch. Currently, they are losing an average of 19.3 pounds and 7.3% of their body weight in just 13 weeks.”

The company’s entry was displayed at the Everyday Health exhibit in the Digital Health Summit TechZone at the 2014 International CES conference in Las Vegas NV. The winners were announced at a live awards ceremony on January 9.

The Everyday Health Awards for Innovation honor individuals, companies or organizations that are utilizing technology to design and engineer innovative products or services that help people or patients with better health outcomes, every day.
