The Federal Highway Administration understands that many trucking companies today are in need of technological systems that improve safety and productivity, streamline administrative processes, and minimize carrier delays. To help answer that need, the agency has put on the road a tractor and 48-foot trailer filled with electronic displays and state-of-the-art components.

Part of the demonstration team includes consultants from private sectors, representatives of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and others from the Department of Transportation (DOT), of which the Federal Highway Administration is part.

Some of the technologies demonstrated on board the rig include collision-avoidance and obstacle detection systems, on-board computing and global positioning systems, satellite-based communications devices, electronic engine monitoring systems, on-board scales, fleet management software, logistics support software, and intelligent mirror technology.

Equipment has been donated by many industry suppliers. Among the items are on-board scales from Air-Weight Scales; X-PERT axle load calculation software from CIE-Tech Inc; Department of Transportation safety and hazmat compliance software from JJ Keller & Associates Inc; and Ride Command air suspension system from Link Manufacturing Ltd. Meritor Automotive Inc furnished a Tripmaster on-board computer; Meritor Heavy Vehicle Systems Inc supplied a Sure Shift transmission, and Meritor WABCO Vehicle Control Systems donated antilock brakes.

Inside the expandable trailer are classroom-type facilities, interactive kiosks, and a driver-simulation area.

The display provides hands-on demonstrations as well as interactive, informational multi-media presentations.

The unit is designed to demonstrate and educate state regulatory agency personnel, key decisionmakers, legislators, and members of the trucking industry. The project also serves as a method of introducing technology to secondary audiences, including transportation students and the general public.

The Technology Truck is touring the county and appearing at a variety of professional conferences, state meetings, truck shows, and other related forums. It can be scheduled in advance for specific meetings, and information about its current displays is available from www.ornl.gov/dp111/index.htm.

Interested organizations, both public and private, are encouraged to submit scheduling requests for the truck. There are certain requirements - such as date, time, location, space and accessibility, as well as available power connections - that will determine which invitations are accepted.
