Colonial Chemical Co, Tabernacle NH, has been awarded a license by the American Petroleum Institute (API) under the API diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) certification program, according to Colonial information.

The license certifies that materials used and fluid produced and marketed by Colonial meets international standards for automotive-grade urea. Many diesel engine manufacturers plan to recommend API-certified diesel exhaust fluid for their 2009 light-duty diesel cars and trucks, as well as 2010 medium and heavy duty trucks.

DEF, an ultra high purity urea solution is used in selective Catalytic reduction (SCR) systems to remove acid rain-forming pollutants from the exhaust of diesel vehicles. The high purity of the DEF is critical to the performance of the SCR system, Colonial said.

API is launching the certification program to verify that the licensees are supplying DEF that meets internationally accepted standards.

Colonial said it has been producing urea solutions for stationary SCR systems for more than 10 years and producing DEF since 2006. It supplies the product nationwide in bulk and packaged forms.
