Case study: Bulk fleet slashes claims with cloud-connected operations

Dec. 14, 2023
Nationwide lubricant distributor RelaDyne reports saving $350,000 on insurance claims in one year using Samsara’s fully integrated video-based safety and telematics platform

Real-time coaching proactively powered by on-demand dashcam footage and a “gamified” safety experience helped RelaDyne reduce harsh events, speeding, and rolling stops—and save $350,000 in insurance claim costs in one year, according to a new case study from Samsara spotlighting its Connected Operations Cloud.

RelaDyne is the largest lubricant sales, distribution, and equipment service provider in North America, serving more than 20,000 customers across 45 states and 22 countries with a fleet of 2,276 trucks, 1,543 trailers, and 900 drivers. The company cited an 82% decrease in the frequency of insurance claims for the cost savings and estimated it also saved up to 180 hours in time spent processing claims, resulting in additional savings. Samsara’s fully connected platform includes its video-based safety system; vehicle telematics; driver apps, workflows, and communications; and valuable fleet data and API integrations, like one with Idelic that incorporates FMCSA information. “Samsara is so easy to use,” said Jason Wurster, RelaDyne senior branch manager.

“It makes reviewing footage and coaching drivers so straightforward—and our drivers are motivated by their safety score to constantly improve.”

They’re also galvanized by ambassadors like RelaDyne’s Robert Chidester, a veteran with more than 2 million accident-free miles who spoke with Bulk Transporter earlier this year about his experience with Samsara’s safety program in advance of National Truck Driver Appreciation Week. “Robert is the perfect example of how powerful driver advocacy is when building a strong culture of safety and securing buy-in within an organization,” confirmed Julu Panat, Samsara’s senior director of product management for video safety.

By sharing his success with peers, Chidester helped drive buy-in “from the ground up.”

“I brought to my peers’ attention that we are here to do a job, and safety is our top priority,” Chidester said. “With dual-facing dashcams, they’re not pushing us to drive faster to get more miles in less time or do anything unsafe. It’s the opposite.

“We’re getting paid to be safe, and that’s good for everyone.”
