Guidebook supplement explains ASME boiler code clarification for magnetic level gages

June 15, 2016

The Clark-Reliance Corporation has published new guidance to the ASME Section I Boiler Code as it pertains to the use of magnetic level gages to indicate boiler water level. Clarifications to the ASME Code for remote level indicators require a special configuration for magnetic level gages (MLGs).

The standard use of a magnetic level gage from most gage manufacturers may result in a Code violation and a safety hazard. However, MLGs can be Code-Compliant. The proper way to employ a MLG on a boiler is detailed in a new Supplement to Clark-Reliance’s authoritative Boiler Inspection Guidelines for Drum Level Instrumentation. The Supplement is free to qualified recipients and can be obtained by visiting http://www.magsonboilers.com.

“In the past, there has been some confusion about the appropriateness of MLGs on boilers,” said Paul Deimling, product manager at Clark-Reliance. “This new document makes clear the ASME code and should be of interest to anyone who operates or maintains a power boiler,”

The new publication is a supplement to Clark-Reliance’s widely-distributed Boiler Inspection Guidelines for Drum Level Instrumentation, which concisely presents ASME Section I water gage inspection requirements for handy, on-the-job reference by boiler operators. It includes Code requirements for water columns, water gage valves, gage glass, remote level indicators, magnetic water level gages and water column isolation shutoff valves. The information includes the 2015 Code changes and CSD-1 requirements as well as recommendations from Section 7. Additionally, the guidebook lists the most common non-compliant drum level equipment arrangements and recommended solutions.
