A DAYCAB version of the Columbia heavy-duty tractor was introduced by Freightliner Corporation at the 2000 Mid-America Trucking Show March 23-25 in Louisville, Kentucky. The new model is targeted at regional, inter-city, and bulk haulers.

"The Columbia Day Cab delivers a high level of performance, efficiency, and style in a highly reliable vehicle package," said Mark Lampert, Senior Vice-President, Sales & Marketing, Freightliner Trucks.

Columbia provides superb visibility and maneuverability for operation on crowded highways, hectic city streets, and narrow roads. A sloped hood and expansive windshield provide outstanding line-of-sight from the cab, while a 50-degree wheel cut affords a tight turning radius.

Underneath the hood, Columbia offers the industry's biggest engines up to 600 hp. With its 120-inch BBC profile, the model is ideally suited for operators who require high horsepower and torque for heavy hauls.

While accommodating big block engines and heavy-duty components, the Columbia also incorporates weight-saving componentry for maximum productivity. Features include a lightweight aluminum cab, and lightweight frame and suspension.

Columbia also is engineered to provide the day-to-day performance required by daycab operators. The truck features numerous low- and no-maintenance components and highly reliable systems. This is evidenced by Columbia's electrical infrastructure, which features simple wiring harnesses and connections, and long-life gauges.

Columbia's interior also is optimized for the rigors of daily operation. The carpet is treated with DuPont Teflon stain and soil protection, preserving a fresh appearance. Trim panels are painted with Hydra Suede, improving surface look and making the panels easier to clean. New rubber door kick panels repel water and snow.

Drivers of the Columbia Day Cab will ride in comfort on a newly redesigned front suspension with leaf-and-a-half spring and tuned shock absorbers. Combined with a rear air suspension and cab air mounts, the suspension package furnishes an exceptional ride over the roughest highways.
