ATA favors Willke appointment to PHMSA hazmat safety

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) is pleased with the appointment of Ted Willke as associate administrator for hazardous materials safety in the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA), according to ATA information.

"Dr Willke's credentials, leadership ability, management experience and expertise in risk management make him an excellent choice for this important position," said Rich Moskowitz, ATA vice-president of the Energy Policy and Regulatory Affairs Counsel. "Dr Willke understands the importance of reducing risks while maintaining our nation's transportation efficiencies."

For a number of months, Willke held the position in PHMSA on an acting basis. Previously, he served as acting associate administrator for pipeline safety and deputy associate administrator for pipeline safety.

Prior to joining the Department of Transportation, Willke was the director and chief executive officer of the Carnegie Mellon Research Institute. During 15 years with the Gas Research Institute in Chicago he was vice-president of research and development for gas transmission and distribution and environmental and safety programs. He has served on a number of industry committees.

Willke has a doctorate in industrial and systems engineering from Ohio State University, a master's of business administration degree from the University of Dayton, and a master's degree in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He graduated with honors from the United States Air Force Academy.
